Picmal overview

Picmal converts and compresses images, videos, and audio files on your Mac — no setup, no technical knowledge required. Drop your files and go. For those who want more control, an advanced mode is available with sensible defaults already dialed in. Picmal feels native because it is: fully integrated with macOS, available wherever apps live on your system. Everything runs locally on your machine, keeping your files private by default.

What's new in version 1.8.2

New Features

One output format for everything you drop. Output settings gains a "Convert everything to" option, so a folder of mixed JPGs, PNGs and HEICs can all come out as WebP without you writing a rule per format. Audio and video are left alone.

Improvements

A fresh app icon. The icon and the menu bar icon have been redrawn to sit properly alongside the rest of your Mac.
A file can now convert to the format it already is. WebP was never offered as a target for a WebP file, so sending a mixed folder to WebP pushed those files out to PNG or JPG and the batch grew instead of shrinking. Any format can now target itself, and Picmal re-encodes it at your compression quality instead.

Bug Fixes

picmal-cli no longer destroys a file it converts in place.
Converting a file to the format it already was, with `--overwrite`, gave the encoder the same path to read from and write to at once, and the original was lost. It now writes a copy alongside and swaps the finished file in.
